Walters named interim head volleyball coach

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (6-25-2008) - Doug Walters has been named the interim head volleyball coach at Cedarville University. He comes to the Lady Jackets following a successful nine-year run as a high school coach in southern Ohio.

Walters is the sixth head coach in the 45-year history of the program and the first male to serve in that capacity. He takes over for Melissa Hartman, who resigned the post after going 69-25 in two seasons.

Walters assembled a 128-73 record in nine years of high school coaching. He most recently spent two seasons at Milford High School, a Division I program near Cincinnati.

Walters previously spent seven years building Eastern High School in Sardinia into one of the top Division III programs in Ohio. The Warriors, who were ranked in the state's Top 10 in three different seasons, won four conference titles, two sectional championships, and were the district runner-up once. He was a four-time conference Coach of the Year and saw eight players continue their careers at the collegiate level.

Walters is the founder and director of the Greater Miami Volleyball Club. The GMVC was started in 2003 and is a Junior Olympic organization that has quickly built a reputation as one of the top regional clubs in Cincinnati.

While serving at Cedarville on an interim basis, Walters will continue to teach science at Milford High School. He assumes a Lady Jacket program that returns seven letter winners from a team that was 24-15 in 2007.

Walters is a 1997 graduate of Northern Kentucky University and he earned his master's degree from the University of Dayton in 2003. Doug and his wife, Angela, reside in Hamersville, Ohio with their daughter Caitlyn, 6.

Hartman steps down from volleyball helm

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (1-17-2008) - Cedarville University athletic director Pete Reese has announced that Melissa Hartman has resigned her position as head coach of the Lady Jacket volleyball program. A search for her successor is already underway.

Hartman served a two-year stint at the helm and posted an impressive 69-25 record. The Jackets had a 24-15 mark last fall after going 45-10 in 2006.

Hartman, who was an assistant to former coach Teresa Clark in 2004 and 2005, enjoyed a memorable campaign in her first season as head coach. She guided the Lady Jackets to their second straight NCCAA national title after they had repeated as Midwest Region champions. She was tabbed the NCCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year and later recognized as National Coach of the Year.

CU earned its third NAIA Region IX title in a row and returned to the NAIA National Tournament for the third straight time. The Jackets were rated as high as 11th nationally in the NAIA poll and produced the school's third consecutive 40-win season.

Cedarville participated in the NCCAA National Tournament as well as the NAIA Region IX Tournament in 2007. The Jackets finished third in the seven-team American Mideast Conference South Division.

Dr. Hartman, a former three-sport Lady Jacket standout and a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame, is a 1996 graduate of Cedarville College with a degree in biology and she earned her M.D. from the Indiana School of Medicine in 2000. She is currently serving as an adjunct professor at Cedarville University teaching Advanced Clinical Physiology.

Zeltman, Short honored by NCCAA

ST. PAUL, Minn. (12-1-2007) - Sarah Zeltman and Libby Short were both recognized with multiple NCCAA awards at the conclusion of the 2007 National Tournament hosted by Northwestern College.

Zeltman, a 6-foot-1 senior middle hitter from Kidron, Ohio, was selected to the NCCAA All-America First Team for the third straight year. She wrapped up an outstanding Lady Jacket career as the school's all-time leader in kills, blocks, and service aces. Zeltman was also chosen to the national all-tournament team for the third time in four years.

Libby Short, a 5-9 junior libero from Springfield, Ohio, earned a spot on the NCCAA All-America Second Team and was honored as an NCCAA Scholar-Athlete. She also received the coveted Hellings Award which recognizes Christian testimony, leadership, academics, and athletic ability. Zeltman named to All-AMC South First Team

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (11-7-2007) - Sarah Zeltman was one of six players named to the All-AMC South Division First Team for the 2007 season. She also earned a spot on the 12-member All-NAIA Region IX Team.

Zeltman, a 6-foot-1 senior middle hitter from Kidron, Ohio, has been selected to the both teams all four years of her career. The voting is conducted by the league's coaches.

Libby Short, a 5-9 junior libero from Springfield, Ohio, and Maija Hampton, a 5-6 junior outside hitter from Cincinnati, Ohio, each nailed down positions on the All-AMC South Division Second Team. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Berger as well as freshman middle hitter Kylee Husak and rookie setter Katie Moon were honorable mention.
